Important Safety Notes
Looking back on the week, I’d like to make a few comments on aspects of best preserving safety within the school:
- We continue to refine our practices, stay updated on best practices, policies, building safety features, and educating staff and students on how to respond to unexpected and potentially dangerous situations. This is a new (or not so new) reality of schools and will continue to be top on our list. We are involved in these conversations through the Archdiocese as well, who maintains that student safety is a top priority.
- We will also continue to refine our communication with you, our parent community. Varying levels of alerts indicate a need for different responses and different kinds or amount of communication. In consideration of South High’s lockout – the surrounding area school principals consulted with the Archdiocese and most decided to go into lockout until more information was available. The SRO (Safety Resource Officer for Schools) and District 3 Police gave the consistent message that the possible threat was very specific to and within South High School. Their decision to go into lockout was also based on the fact that they are an open campus with students allowed to come and go on free periods. They needed to shut the open campus status down in order to do a proper safety assessment. We are told that the police and SRO will contact us directly if they are advising us to go into lockout at any time. We will pass that information on to you, our parents, if a lockout is advised from public safety personnel. A lockout requires that all entry into the building is exclusively through the front door where we can best monitor who is in the building. To this end, please do not ask or expect a student to let you in the door at any time, and especially never through the back of the school or side doors. We will be re-educating our children to not open the door for anyone – a tutor, a coach, a friend’s parent, a teacher. Your support in this is paramount so as not to confuse the children. This is clearly a best practice and can be done without harming our very warm and welcoming community. The adults responsible for security will be the ones to let other people in the building.
- This week we learned more about parent response to an alert. Please know that we are constantly alert to dangers – from spilled water on a slick floor to crossing a city street to strangers on the property. When South High locked out our awareness for security was naturally increased. We received about 50-60 parent phone calls into the front office following the alert, and this can hinder the availability of essential staff to be handling what is going on within the school – ie the safety of all the children here. We never want you to feel like you cannot call the school, but would like to assure you that we do have lines of communication with public safety and are aware of surrounding incidents, that we will respond to them appropriately, and will contact you whenever there is need to do so. In this situation, we had only enough information to make a decision to lockout and could not offer more details. As the alert stated, it was through an abundance of caution that we made the decision.
- Finally, just thank you! Thank you for trusting your children to us each day. We value that trust; we believe that you don’t give it lightly, and we intend to keep it.
Volleyball Tournament – SVDP is in the playoffs!
Please come and support our Varsity Girls Team as they enter into a higher level of tournament play this weekend. We went into the tournament as #1 seed and undefeated! We defeated St. Catherine’s this week and play Christ the King at Regis University on Saturday 5/11/2019 at 3PM. Please come and support our team! If we win, we will play at Bishop Machebeuf High School the following Saturday for the championship. Go Crusaders!
Survey for Strategic Planning
In order to gather as much data as possible to begin our strategic plan, please complete the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness survey. Your feedback, both positive and constructive, will support the process of improvement at SVDP School for the coming years, and can have direct impact on the children who are currently at the school. Thank you for taking the time to provide clear and specific feedback.
Reimbursement receipts by May 30
To help us to close out our books in a timely way, please submit reimbursable receipts no later than May 30th, and sooner if possible. This is particularly important for anyone who is asking for reimbursement for a gala-related expense. Receipts turned in after June 30th will not be considered for reimbursement.
Training for Summer Help in the Outdoor Lab

If you are interested in participating in this volunteer program (perks of collecting fresh eggs and fresh vegetables for your family on the days you volunteer) please call the front office to let us know that you would like to be trained. A Sign Up Genius will be published later in May for families to sign up according to their availability/vacation schedules.

BIG NEWS in our King Soopers card world – please read: King Soopers has made it easier for us to earn $$ for SVdP.
The King Soopers program is changing. You will no longer have to reload your King Soopers gift card or purchase a King Soopers gift card in order for SVdP to receive money back!
