2019 Paddle Raiser Update
As some of our paddle raiser projects are under way, it is a good time to update the community on expected project completion.
The Gym Ceiling: This project has been bid out by two vendors, each offering very different solutions (spray on, scrape and re-tile). Neither of these seems to be the best choice for SVDP. However, we have had difficulty getting responses from other vendors to bid it, even though their solutions seem to be more appealing. We have not settled on any particular solution at this time, but continue to research and reach out to vendors. Our SAC and our maintenance staff have been involved in this process, but we were not able to get to a position of decision in time to have this completed over the summer. Please be assured that all 2019 paddle raiser money, including the $45,000 dedicated for this project is protected in a segregated school fund bank account and will be used as intended. More information to come as we determine the right vendor for this project.
The Library: $15,000 allotted.
Items purchased:
- $315 dedicated checkout station computer hardware
- $65 barcode scanner for self check-out
- $510 dedicated library printer
- $4,390 durable, kid friendly furniture
- $555 alternative, self-select seating for library classes
- $5,835 has been spent thus far
Mrs. Edmonds is still researching for purchase:
- checkout station stand ~$50
- circulation desk ~$2,000+
- adding to/renewing the collection (the balance of the $15,000 will be spent here over the next year)
The Playground: The crew has been working this week on the final stage of the playground which is the installation of the new rubber ground surface. Bag by bag they poured, spread, compacted, and sealed. The original invoice/quote for this project totals $167,794 and includes all freight, removal and disposal of old equipment and poles, the new play structure and additional “Loopy Whoop” spinning element, the rubber ground surface (itself $44,032), patch work under the swings, basketball systems (standard and lowered sets), tetherball, playground striping for basketball courts, tetherball courts, four square courts, dragonfly hopscotch, and movement of the gaga ball pit to accommodate more sports area play. The students FINALLY got out onto the playground today. All available classes met up at the playground at 9:15 as Father Doug blessed the space. The three weeks of built up anticipation was let out all at once as students raced around this space that they love so much. The students enjoyed a popsicle to celebrate the day.
The Boiler: The school boiler is NOT included among the paddle raiser projects and does not use any of the restricted funds dedicated for the above three projects. However, the tremendous success of the 2019 gala, apart from restricted funds, made the rebuild of the boiler possible this year. CCS Mechanical has been working on this project since August and it will be ready and working long before it is needed this winter. The boiler panel is held on by nearly 100 welded screws. It is doubtful that the boiler would have passed inspection another year because when the panel has been removed the past few years for cleaning and preventive maintenance, several of these screws had begun breaking off due to 60 years of wear and tear. The boiler panel was approaching a tipping point of not being strong enough to withstand heat/pressure. The expected cost of the entire project is $84,788.
