Accelerated Reader Program in 2020-2021
Grades 1-6, 8 are participating in the Accelerated Reader program. We believe that children in our community continue to have access to books, and we can help support you/them when you need ways to get more books. Accelerated Reader is a program that runs alongside a school curriculum to help foster a student’s interests and to develop strong, independent readers. It can be rolled out or implemented in a variety of ways; because we are not having normal library classes, this program will no longer be run through the library or under the coordination of the librarian. Instead, homeroom teachers (or lit teachers fro 6, 8 grades) are running the program in the classroom. Students will receive their trimester goals (number of points associated with amount/level of reading ability) no later than October 1. Many classes have already received their goals. Teachers will do the following to help support the program:
- Communicate the student goal to each student (goals are dependent upon reading ability, largely determined by the STAR assessment)
- Ensure students know how to login to their AR account in order to take an AR quiz (after finishing a book)
- provide time and devices on a regular basis for students to take tests, usually daily opportunity
Home and School sponsors a trimester end event to get prizes for students who meet/exceed their goals. This could be something like the prize wheel, an ice cream bar during lunch, or similar.

Did you order milk for your student?
Is your student in extended day (after school) care?
Will your student participate in a sport at school?
You will be billed via FACTS Incidental Billing. Please read below.
All SVdP parents are enrolled in the FACTS Student Information System (SIS) and tuition payment plan. In addition to paying tuition, the FACTS Incidental Billing option is used to process billing and payments for school activities including the milk program, extended care (EC) after school program and athletic fees.
If you ordered milk for your student(s) or your child attends Extended Care, you will receive an email from FACTS advising you of the Incidental Billing balance that is due. Unless you authorized an automatic withdrawal for Incidental Billing during your account set up, you will need to click the link in your email and authorize a withdrawal. The email invoice will contain the due date, amount due and the payment link. Please do not send cash or checks to the school office. Questions? Please email jhaberkorn@svdpk8.com. Thank you!
Managing Personal Belongings and Deliveries in a COVID year
Please mark your child’s items (water bottles, clothing, masks, lunch boxes and back packs). Due to Covid restrictions, we are unable to have a lost and found area. We will return a marked item if it has a child’s name on it. Otherwise, it must be discarded. In order to minimize classroom interruptions, we are asking for only emergency lunch deliveries. Your child will have access to cups for water and additional masks, so we are asking not to deliver forgotten water bottles, masks, snacks, or school work. Thank you for helping us by labeling your child’s items and assuring they have their lunch, snack, water bottle and needed work before they arrive each day at school.

Room Parent/SVdP Serves/Gala Rep sign up
***We will be having our first volunteer meeting on Friday, September 18th at 8:30am at Observatory park. All are welcome! Come and learn how you can help!***
Room Parents are responsible for assisting teachers in planning special events and parties for the classes (this may look a little different this year). They also serve as a critical communication liaison for both teachers and Home and School updates. Events and parties may include: Harvest, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and the end of year parties for younger grades; Fun Run (and in the past, Spaghetti Dinner and Talent Show for older grades); a class-sponsored teacher appreciation luncheon; and assistance in obtaining drivers for field trips or other class trips (of course, some of these events may not occur this year due to COVID). The communications needs are generally limited to forwarding emails coming from Home and School on important upcoming events (usually monthly), and any other assistance with communications a teacher may need.
SVDP Serves offers opportunities for students to be stewards of our faith through education (service learning) and by serving our local communities including but not limited to; seniors, our neighbors, individuals experiencing homelessness, children with special needs, young families and more. If you would like to help coordinate service projects for your student’s grade, please volunteer with our committee. We need two Service Coordinators per grade. Please contact Lara O’Shaughnessy at lara_osh1@yahoo.com if you have any questions.
Gala Class Representative helps communicate the initiatives, events and goals of the gala to the class/parents. The gala rep also assists in brainstorming exciting fundraising items and events for their class to support. In previous years, the Gala Rep hosted a party for moms/dads to collect donations/brainstorm on class donation gift ideas. With our precautions of keeping families healthy, the Gala Rep will be encouraged to think of a different way to brainstorm and collect donations. We need one or two gala reps per grade level.

Be a HERO to our teachers
Our Home & School is sponsoring a sign up for volunteers to help support the school/relieve teachers of lunch and recess duties. Back to school may look very normal from the outside, but for a variety of reasons, our teachers have less planning time in their day, and more supervision duties than they have had in the past; it has been a rough adjustment. You can help support our teachers by signing up to cover a lunch or recess duty one day each week for a month. A teacher was overheard last week that she was grateful to have had enough time on a particular day to heat her food before eating lunch – this is not always possible right now. Another was heard to say that she packs something for lunch that takes less chew time so she can be sure to finish a meal. HELP US if you can! Please use this sign up to commit to one or more recess or lunch duties. Read the expectation carefully before signing up and THANK YOU. Contact H&S Chair Marissa Ogden with any questions about the commitment. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0449adad2ba2f85-lunch
Please note the following calendar change for coming school year 2020-2021.
October 5, 6, 7 will be regular school days
